Press Release
“My Statistics and Me” Story-Writing Contest launched
(PR-200808-PP1-06, Posted 21 August 2008)
The 19th National Statistics Month (NSM) Steering Committee is now calling for entries for a story-writing contest dubbed as “My Statistics and Me” as part of the nationwide celebration of the 19th NSM this October. Open to all Filipinos here and abroad, the contest focuses on this year’s NSM theme: “Statistics: Key to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Development.” The search is on for stories that share inspiring ideas on how entrepreneurs benefit from using statistics to succeed in business.
As this year’s host of the opening ceremony and Chair of the 19th NSM Sub-Committee on Programs and Awards and the Sub-Committee on Publicity and Advocacy, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) leads in the launching of the contest as an innovative approach in promoting awareness and use of statistics in business.
The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), the policy-making and coordinating agency on statistical matters in the country, created the 19th NSM Steering Committee to oversee and coordinate the implementation of various activities and programs for the month-long celebration. The Committee is composed of representatives from various government departments and agencies, academic institutions, and the private sector. It is chaired by NSCB Secretary General Romulo A. Virola and co-chaired by DTI-Bureau of Small and Medium Enterprise Development (BSMED) Director Rhodora Leaño.
The story-writing contest highlights the role of statistics in business promotion and development, specifically in micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). It is aimed at promoting best practices in the use of statistics in growing a business and in encouraging entrepreneurs – and the public in general – to use statistics to succeed in business.
A cash prize in the amount of ten thousand pesos (P10,000), sponsored by the DTI, awaits the winner. A plaque, aside from a potential national recognition in the business sector, will also be awarded to the winner. A contestant may be an entrepreneur, or somebody who knows the story of a successful entrepreneur. The story must be written in either English or Filipino within 1,000 to 1,500 words. It must not be previously published in print or online. Since this contest aims to encourage the sharing of ideas on the use of statistics in growing a business, more emphasis will be given on the content of the story, rather than on writing style. In the criteria for judging, 80% is given to content, 10% to form, and the remaining 10% to reader-friendliness.
Entries should be submitted in MS Word format, double-spaced, not later than September 10, 2008 to:NSM STORY-WRITING CONTEST
