Philippine Economic-Environmental
and
Natural Resources Accounting (PEENRA)
Interim
Results
Fishery Resources
Population in the Philippines has grown significantly and with this, the demand
for basic commodities has increased. The demand for fish, both for food consumption
and other uses, has increased correspondingly. Consequently, many of the households
from the coastal villages have made fishing as their source of livelihood.
Forestry Resources
There were two major causes in the decline of stocks of forest resources
during the period 1988 to 1994. The country lost resources worth P48.6
billion to havesting and other logging activities, while the conversion
of forestland to non-forest use accounted for P20.4 billion in losses.
Water Resources
In the aftermath of the El Niño phenomenon, the importance of accounting
for the country’s water resources has never been more evident. To address
the growing problem of the country’s water supply, there is a need
to come up with indicators of the country’s consumption and stock
of water resources.
Mineral Resources
The mining industry plays a very important role in the country’s
economic development. For one, the industry provides employment opportunities
to a significant portion of the population, directly and indirectly.
The launching of a mining project spurs local and regional economic development
as mining firms invest in road infrastructure, utilities, and other facilities
within the mine site.
