Tourism Statistics Highlighted in the
14th National Statistics Month

In October 2003, the Philippine Statistical System (PSS) will celebrate the 14th National Statistics Month (NSM) with the theme, “Sustaining Tourism’s Competitive Edge Through Statistics.”

This year’s theme recognizes the role of statistics in promoting the country’s advantages and potentials as a destination area for local and foreign visitors. The theme further supports the Visit the Philippines 2003 program of the Department of Tourism, the sponsor of the 14th NSM opening ceremony to kick-off the month-long observance of this annual PSS event. Meanwhile, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) will host the closing ceremony which will be held during the 7th Oratorical Contest jointly sponsored by the BSP and the Department of Education. For the celebration of the 14th NSM, the NSCB has issued Memorandum Circular No. 01-03(NSM) on May 21, 2003 enjoining the participation and support of national and local government agencies and the private sector to this annual event.

The 14th NSM Steering Committee oversees and coordinates the implementation of the various activities and programs to be undertaken during the month-long celebration. It is chaired by the NSCB Secretary General and co-chaired by the Undersecretary for Planning, Product Development and Coordination of the DOT. During the organizational meeting of the committee held on May 13th, it created the Sub-Committee on Publicity and Advocacy and the Sub-Committee on Programs to carry out specific activities to ensure the successful observance of the 14th NSM.

The annual observance of the NSM is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647, “Declaring the Month of October Every Year as the National Statistics Month.” The objectives of the NSM are (1) to promote, enhance, and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics; and (b) to elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.
