2000 Gross Regional Domestic Expenditure (GRDE)
(as of August 2002)

HIGHLIGHTS

Expenditures on gross domestic product, in constant 1985 prices, amounted to P 958.4 billion in 2000, posting an accelerated growth of 4.4 percent from a 3.4 percent growth in 1999. All the regions except ARMM posted positive growths on their expenditures (Table 1.3B).

The Luzon area registered an expansion of 4.5 percent on its expenditure in 2000 largely due to increased expenditure in the National Capital Region (NCR) and the Southern Tagalog (Region IV), which posted growths of 5.8 percent and 3.5 percent, respectively. The increase in NCR was mostly ascribed to increases in the personal consumption expenditure (4.9 percent), and construction expenditure, with a 17.3 percent growth. Similarly, personal consumption expenditure (PCE) which grew by 3.8 percent bolstered the total expenditure of Southern Tagalog (Region IV).  The NCR and Southern Tagalog (Region IV) contributed 2.7 percentage points and 0.8 percentage point, respectively, to the total growth of Luzon (see Table 5B).

The Visayas area increased its expenditure by 4.2 percent, on account of the good performance of Central Visayas (Region VII) at 6.3 percent which is largely due to the 27.7 percent growth in construction expenditure.  Central Visayas (Region VII) contributed 2.7 percentage points to the total growth of the Visayas area (see Table 5B).

The Mindanao area, likewise, showed an accelerated increase in its total expenditure at 4.1 percent in 2000 from a 3.6 percent increase in the previous year. Southern Mindanao (Region XI) contributed the most in the Mindanao area as its expenditure went up by 4.6 percent.  Southern Mindanao (Region XII) had a 1.6 percentage point contribution to the total growth of Mindanao (see Table 5B).

The National Capital Region (NCR) which accounts for 30.7 percent of total Philippine expenditure posted a total of P 294.4 billion in 2000, an increase of 5.8 percent from a 2.2 percent growth in 1999. Southern Tagalog (Region IV) incurred a total expenditure amounting to P 146.5 billion or 15.3 percent of the total expenditure of the country. The region with the least expenditure is still the ARMM with its total expenditure amounting to only P 9.1 billion in 2000.
