Did you know that … Quezon City is the most populated city and Davao City
is the largest city among the country’s 136 cities?

Based on the final results of the latest Census of Population (POPCEN 2007) conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO), Quezon City in the National Capital Region (NCR) had the highest city population at 2.7 million (M) or 3.0% of the country’s total population of 88.57 M, while the cities of Manila and Kalookan, also in the NCR, ranked second and third, respectively. The City of Manila has a population of 1.7 M or 1.9% while Kalookan City has a population 1.4 M or 1.6%. On the other hand, Davao City and Zamboanga City each posted the largest city areas at 2,443.6 and 1,483.4 sq. km, respectively, and ranked 4th and 6th, respectively, in terms of population. Cebu City ranked fifth based on the latest population count. The table below shows the ten most populated cities in the country.

In terms of income generation and population, thirty-two cities or 23.5% of the 136 cities in the country are now classified as highly urbanized cities (HUC) based in the Provisions of Sec. 452 of the Local Government Code of the Philippines 3 and on the latest conversion4/ of Component Cities into HUCs on July 2007.

Meanwhile, four cities or 3.0% were classified as independent component cities (ICC) with two coming from Luzon and one each from Visayas and Mindanao.  One hundred or 73.5% cities were classified as component cities (CC).

Seven of these cities are capital cities of their original provinces 5/ These include Lucena, Iloilo City, Bacolod, Cebu City, Cagayan de Oro, Butuan and Puerto Princesa.

8/ Component Cities - Cities which do not meet the above requirements shall be considered component cities of the province in which they are geographically located. If a component city is located within the boundaries of two (2) or more provinces, such city shall be considered a component of the province of which it used to be a municipality.
