Filipino Emigrants to New Zealand Increase Four-Fold in 2006

The number of Filipino emigrants to New Zealand increased to 1,973 in 2006 – an increase of 400% from its 2005 level of 394.  Data from the Commission of Filipino Overseas also showed that New Zealand’s 2006 level is the highest since it reached 1,005 in 1996.

In 2006, the total number of Filipino emigrants reached 82,967in 2006, 20.2% higher than in 2005.  After New Zealand, other major countries of destinations which experienced an increase in Filipino emigrants were Japan  (37.9%), Germany (24.5%), Australia (23.4%), the US (22.9%) and UK (16.3%). Meanwhile, Canada experienced a decline of 2.7% in the influx of Filipino emigrants.

Statistics further showed that the number of Filipino emigrants was on the rise starting 1984 until the Asian Financial Crisis occurred from 1997 to 1999. In 1998, the  number of Filipino emigrants  dropped to its lowest level of  39,009 as a result of a 32.7% drop of  Filipino emigrants going to the US.

Since 1982, majority of Filipino emigrants preferred to go to the U.S. than in other countries. In 2006 alone, almost sixty percent (59.7%) or 49,522 chose the US as their destination followed by Canada (15.9%), Japan (11.7%), Australia (4.5%), New Zealand (2.4%), UK (0.7%) and Germany (0.6%) and other countries (4.5%). It was noted that while the shares of Japan and Canada of 0.6% and 9.1%, respectively in 1982 increased significantly to 11.7% and 16.0%, respectively in 2006, that of the US declined from 82.4%  in 1982 to 59.7% in 2006.

Most of the Filipino emigrants in 2006 were female which comprised 61.1% while male emigrants comprised only 38.9% of the total. Over the period 1982 to 2006, the percentage of female Filipino emigrants was always higher compared to male Filipino emigrants.  

In terms of age, a large percentage (25.2%) of Filipino emigrants in 2006 belonged in the age group 25-34 followed by those in the age group 14-below (21.6%), 15-24 (19.8%), 35-44 (14.8%), 45-54 (7.3%), 55-64 (6.0%) and 65-above (5.3%). Compared to 1982, data for 2006 showed an increase in the percentage share of those aged 44 and below and a corresponding decrease in the share of those aged 45 and above.
