Caticlan Airport Now 5th Busiest Outside Metro Manila

Caticlan Airport in Malay, Aklan became the 5th busiest airport outside of Metro Manila in 2005. Data from the Air Transportation Office (ATO) show that the airport’s number of passengers more than tripled in the past four years.  It has also shown a consistent upward trend since 2001 when it was ranked 10th.

Aside from Caticlan, the other airports outside of Metro Manila in the top five list in terms of passenger volume are Mactan-Cebu, Davao, Iloilo and Bacolod – all of which served more than half a million passengers.

Caticlan Airport also known as Godofredo P. Ramos Airport is a feeder airport with a concrete runway that measures 810 meters. It is one of the two gateways to Boracay, one of the Philippines' best-known tourist destinations famous for its powder-like sand.

Meanwhile, the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) is consistently the busiest airport outside of Metro Manila for the past five years.  It handled a total of 2.2 million and 1.9 million passengers in 2001 and 2005, respectively.  However, the CEB experienced a large drop of 18.6% in passenger volume from 2004 to 2005.

The Davao International Airport (Francisco Bangoy International Airport) which is the 2nd busiest, had a total passenger volume of 1.3 million in 2005. From 2001, its passenger volume increased by 41.6% although it experienced a 22.6% decrease from 2002 to 2003.

In terms of aircraft movement, the Mactan-Cebu International Airport also ranked No. 1 outside of Metro Manila in 2005 as it posted the highest figure with 35,146 aircraft take-offs and landings. It is followed by Caticlan with 20,266 and Davao with 12,686.

Airports in the top 10 list in terms of aircraft movement that showed significant increases from 2001 to 2005 were Puerto Princesa (147.8%), Caticlan (133.7%) and Busuanga (25.9%).  The rest in the list showed decreases with Tacloban Airport experiencing the highest decline at 39.4%.
