Did you know that…

Chart

Source of data: National Accounts of the Philippines, NSCB

ANALYSIS: (pls. see chart above)

For the period 1996-2002, constant price estimates from the National Accounts of the Philippines showed that investments on equipment have not recovered its levels prior to the Asian financial crisis. Last year, investments on Durable Equipment although posting a slight improvement of 1.4% compared to 2001, was still lower than the 1997 level by about 20.4%.

ANALYSIS: (pls. see chart below)

Data from the CAMPI (which includes non-CAMPI data) showed an increase of 11.6% in the total number of automotive vehicle units sold from 2001 to 2002. However, the data indicate that the 2002 levels are 41.0% lower than the total sales in 1997 when the Asian financial crisis hit the region. Furthermore, while commercial vehicle sales are close to recovering their pre-crisis levels, the sale of passenger cars continued to be way below the pre-crisis level with 2002 sales representing only 28.5%  of the 1997 sales figure.

Press Release on the Philippine Imports by
Major Type of Goods, National Statistics Office

ANALYSIS:

Based on NSO data, imports of capital goods (FOB values), after a big jump from 1996 to 1997 of 32.6%, showed a relatively flat trend until 2000. However in 2002, imports of capital goods significantly went up again by 17.5%. (Note: These are based on unadjusted figures; the revisions being undertaken by the NSO upon the recommendations of the Task Force on the Revisions of Import Statistics on Electronics are not expected to materially affect the imports of capital goods.)

For the last 4-5 years, some types of equipment have posted remarkable figures and these are the ff.:

Office machines & data processing—posted 40.5% in 2000 with even higher growths in earlier years because of the penetration of computers in the educational institutions and also in homes;

Sugarmill machineries—posted 90.9% last year as the rehabilitation of aging muscovado sugarmills continues;

Other electrical machinery and Water transport—posted 88.4% and 27.0% respectively in 2002 as the demand increases for equipment used in automatic circuit breakers and relays, and for water transportation.
