Higher Unemployment Rates for Women Than Men

During the period 1996 to 2002, unemployment rates among women were consistently higher compared to men except in 1999 and 2000. In 2002, however, the smallest difference of 0.1 percent was observed.

More than one-third or 36 percent of women workers in 2002 were laborers and unskilled workers. Seventeen percent of women worked as officials of government and/or as executives and managers while 12 percent were engaged as service workers.
On the other hand, farming at 29 percent was the most common occupation among men.

Women workers were mostly engaged in domestic/private household activities (laundresses, maids, cooks, babysitters, etc), education as well as health and social work industries in 2002.
On the other hand, almost all workers in the construction, transport, fishing, mining as well as the electricity and water (EGW) industry sectors were men.
