A New Region Created
FS#2 Series of 2002

On May 17, 2002, Executive Order No. 103 “Dividing Region IV into Region IV-A and Region IV-B, Transferring the province of Aurora to Region III and for other purposes” was issued. In accordance with  E. O. No. 103, Region IV-A shall be known as  CALABARZON and shall be composed of the provinces of Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon and Rizal and their respective cities while Region IV-B shall be known as MIMAROPA and shall be composed of the provinces of Marinduque, Mindoro Occidental, Mindoro Oriental, Palawan and Romblon and their respective cities. The Province of Aurora is transferred to Region III.  As a result of these creation and transfer, the total number of regions in the country increased to 17  from 16 in December 31, 2001. The rest of the local government units remain the same as of June 30, 2002.

Other changes in the same period include the  renaming of  the following barangays:

  1. Bgy. Bactad Proper, Urdaneta City, Pangansinan to Brgy. Dr. Pedro T. Orata,  per SB Res. # 96 dtd July 26, 1989;
  2. Brgy. Tabacan, Dinalupihan, Bataan to Brgy. Santa Isabel,  per SB Res.# 114-84 dtd Oct. 9, 1984;
  3. Brgy. Nouvelas Orienal, Basey, Samar to Bgy. San Fernando, per SB Res.#  60 s. 1991 dtd July 1, 1991 & Mun. Ord. # 3 s. 1991;
  4. Bgy. Lumayong, Carmen, North Cotabato to Brgy. Ugalingan, per SB Res. # 152 & Ord. # 45 dtd. Nov. 27, 1991;
  5. Brgy. Bad-asay, Surigao City, Surigao del North to Brgy. Serna per SP Res. # 152 & Ord. # 45 dtd. Nov. 27, 1991;
  6. Brgy. Zone I, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur to Brgy. Benigno Aquino, per SB Res. # 1842 dtd Oct. 30, 1990.

Luzon, the largest island group in the country, has now 8 regions with 38 provinces, 55 cities, 716 municipalities and 20,476 barangays. Visayas still has 3 regions, 16 provinces, 32 cities, 376 municipalities and 11,443 barangays while Mindanao has remained with 6 regions, 25 provinces, 27 cities, 404 municipalities and 10,026 barangays.
