A New City and a Municipality Created ![]()

During the second semester of 2001, one municipality was converted into a city in the province of Nueva Ecija in Region III while a municipality was formed in the provinces of Maguindanao, ARMM. These are the municipality of Gapan which was converted to City of Gapan, Nueva Ecija and the newly created municipality of Paglat, Maguindanao. As a result of these conversion and creation, the total number of cities in the country increased to 114 while the total number of municipalities remained at 1,496 as of December 31, 2001.
Other changes in the same period include the re-enlistment and renaming of barangays Concordia and Oracon to barangays Concordia Sur and Oracon Sur in the municipality of Nueva Valencia, Guimaras, Region VI. Two other barangays were renamed in the municipality of Sibunag also in Guimaras, Region VI. The renamed barangays are Bgys. Concordia and Oracon which were changed to barangays Concordia Norte and Oracon Norte. These revisions are all based on the decision of Hon. Judge Merlyn D. Diloria of the Regional Trial Court, 6th Judicial, Branch 65, San Miguel, Jordan, Guimaras. These changes brought the total number of barangays in the country to 41,945.
In addition, Executive Order No. 36 “Providing for the Reorganization of the Administrative Regions in Mindanao and for other purposes” was implemented providing for the transfer of the following provinces and city from one region to another: provinces of Lanao del Norte from Region XII to Region X; Sarangani and South Cotabato from Region XI to Region XII; Basilan from Region IX to ARMM and Marawi City from Region XII to ARMM. Isabela City of Basilan remained under Region IX.
Luzon, the largest island group in the country, has now 55 cities, 716 municipalities and 20,476 barangays. Visayas still has 32 cities, 376 municipalities and 11,443 barangays while Mindanao has now 27 cities, 404 municipalities and 10,026 barangays.
