One (1) Province and 14 New Cities Created ![]()

On February 22, 2001, Republic Act No. 8973 approved the creation of the province of Zamboanga Sibugay out of the 16 municipalities from the province of Zamboanga del Sur in Region IX.
During the first quarter of this year, 14 municipalities were converted into 14 cities in different provinces of the country as shown in the table below.
As a result of these creation/conversions, the number of provinces increased to 79, the number of cities totaled 110 while the municipalities decreased to 1,499 as of March 2001.
Other changes in the same period include the re-enlistment of barangay San Rafael in Calaca, Batangas and the renaming of two barangays. The renamed barangays are Bgy. Diaton to Bgy. Pedro F. Alviar in Vintar, Ilocos Norte and Bgy. Cabilaoan East to Bgy. Domingo Alarcio in Laoac, Pangasinan.
Among the three island groups, Luzon has the most number of regions at seven (7) and the highest number of provinces at 38 (48.1%) with 719 municipalities (48.0%). On the other hand, Visayas has the least number of regions at three (3) with 16 provinces (20.3%) and 376 municipalities (25.1%) while Mindanao has six (6) regions and 25 provinces (31.6%) and 404 municipalities or 27.0%.
