Icon For the Record

... aims to “set the record straight” by presenting facts and figures to clarify

  1. issues on official statistics that have been misquoted, misinterpreted, misused and
  2. questions on assumptions and methodologies used in generating official statistics,

which have been published in newspapers and websites, broadcast in radio or television, and/or presented/discussed in public fora.

Principle 4 of the United Nations Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics states that “statistical agencies are entitled to comment on erroneous interpretation and misuse of statistics.” While statistics can be used and interpreted in many different and acceptable ways, it is important that attention be drawn by statistical agencies to incorrect use or misinterpretation by users of official statistics in order to maintain trust and confidence on official statistics.

Through this information service, we hope to continue enlightening our public on proper data analysis and interpretation and thus promote responsible use of official statistics produced by the Philippine Statistical System.

If you have encountered or are aware of any news article or opinion/view published in the media or the Internet, or any public presentation that tends to confuse rather than enlighten or does not conform to generally-accepted statistical standards and principles, you are most welcome to e-mail us at info@nscb.gov.ph.
