NSCB Announces the Winners of the 2nd NSM Media Awards
and 20th NSM Best Activity and Best Region ![]()

As part of the 21st National Statistics Month (NSM) celebration, the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) announces the winners of the 2nd NSM Media Awards and the 20th NSM Best Activity and Best Region. Adjudged winner for the print category is Ms. Iris Gonzales of the Philippine Star. She was awarded for her article “RP races to meet Millennium Development Goals by 2015” published in the July 25, 2010 issue of the Philippine Star. She received a Plaque of Recognition and a cash prize of Php 20,000.
Special Citations were given to Ms. Bernadette S. Reyes, GMA 7 News and Public Affairs for the TV Broadcast Category and Mr. Thads Bentulan, DYAB, ABS-CBN-Cebu for the Radio Broadcast Category. The Board of Judges for the 2nd NSM Media Awards includes : Prof. Solita C. Monsod as Chair, with Dr. Vicente B. Valdepeñas,Jr., Ms. Nieves L. Osorio, and Ms. Mercedes F. Robles as members. Sponsors were Bangko Sentral Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and National Statistics Office (NSO).
The NSM Media Awards are given to media practitioners in recognition of their important role in promoting and communicating statistics and valuing its use in planning and decision-making and for the professional handling of statistical information. The awarding of the 2nd NSM Media Awards was held on October 4, 2010 during the Joint Opening Ceremonies for the 21st NSM and the 11th National Convention on Statistics (NCS) at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel in Mandaluyong City.
Meanwhile, the National Statistics Office (NSO) garnered two awards for the Best Activity By Category in NCR when it won the Best Statistical Exhibit and Best Statistical Contest categories for its Statistical Exhibit at SM Supermalls in Metro Manila and the 2009 NCR Statistical Quiz and Essay Writing Contest, respectively. The NSO received a Plaque of Recognition and a cash prize of Php 10,000 for each winning activity.
For the Best NSM Region category, Region 6 won the 2009 Best NSM Region and received a Plaque of Recognition and cash prize of Php 20,000. On the other hand, Region 1 was awarded the Hall of Fame for winning the Best NSM Region for three (3) consecutive years in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The Board of Judges for the 20th NSM Best Activity and Best Region was composed of Dr. Peter Paul Reuben G. Galvez (DND) as Chair, with Dir. Ma. Lumen B. Isleta (DFA), Ms. Maria Tereza I. Escubio (DENR), Ms. Frances Erika L. Claravall (DOJ), and Ms. Evelyn F. Ognibar (NSOI) as members.
The NSM Awards System has been instituted to give recognition to the outstanding participation in the NSM celebration. It is also a means of providing incentive to participating individuals and agencies in the observance of NSM and a way of encouraging wider participation in the NSM celebration. At the same time, it promotes the conduct of activities that further the objectives and spirit of this annual statistical event. The awarding rites for the 20th NSM Best Activity and Best Region were held on October 5, 2010 during the closing ceremonies of the 11th NCS at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel in Mandaluyong City.
