Sur's hidden paradise
Caramoan is one of
the thirty-five municipalities of the Province of Camarines Sur and is
situated at the heart of the Caramoan Peninsula at the southernmost tip of
Luzon. It occupies the lower eastern portion of the Province of Camarines
Sur. It is bounded on the north by the town of Garchitorena and the Pacific
Ocean; on the northeast by the island province of Catanduanes; on the south
by Lagonoy Gulf; on the east by the Maqueda Channel and on the west by the
municipality of Presentacion.
The trip to
Caramoan is all about outdoor experience. A get-away paradise from the
stressful city life and a perfect pilgrimage destination. But reaching the place is not easy for some, they say, especially for first time visitors.
It's a long road to travel, but along the way, the trip itself is already a
pack of excitement. The joy of a boat ride, the smell and feel of the
Pacific Ocean's cool-breeze, the view of the majestic Mayon volcano from afar, the panoramic scenery of beautiful coastal line of green
mountains, and unique rock formations, add up to a
mesmerizing experience.
Topography
The municipality is situated between 124 degrees 59" east longitude and 13
degrees 46" north
latitude. It covers approximately 27,741 square kilometers with
approximately 71 kilometers of irregular coastline surrounded by the vast
ocean, bay, seas and swamps. It is approximately 501 kilometers away from
Metro Manila; 95 kilometers from the municipality of Pili, where the seat of
the provincial government and the Pili Domestic Airport are located; and 110
kilometers away from Naga City, the heart of Bicol.
Caramoan is a
stretch of irregular, rugged coastline with clusters of islands. This
peninsula sits amidst crystal clear water and boasts of rocky terrain and white sand
beaches. The Caramoan National Park (1983) offers breath taking limestone
cliffs, untouched coral reefs with diverse marine life, enigmatic lagoons,
subterranean river and caves.
Climate
The climate of Caramoan
is tropical which is divided into wet and dry season. The climatic control
over the two air stream systems produce the two distinctive variations in
the climate, the monsoon and the Pacific trade winds. From October to
January, the northeast monsoon prevails, while the north Pacific trade winds
occur from February to September.
Mineral Resources
Caramoan is one
town in the province of Camarines Sur which obviously is endowed with
untapped natural resources. There abound numerous mineral deposits like
copper, gold, manganese, limestone and marble in varied colors. Caramoan is also a land of many caves, river, lakes, lagoon
(found through hiking within the island) and a sea of crystal clear water
decorated by many beautiful unexplored islands. It also boasts of its long
miles of sugary, white beaches that even rival the world's best beaches and
would lure foreign and local investors from the tourism industry which would
provide a virtual advantage to this town, thus boosting its economic
condition.
