Increasing Number of Reported HIV-AIDS Cases in Mindanao
Posted  21 December 2011

The Southern Phil. Medical Center-Women and Children Protection Unit reported that the number of HIV-AIDS Cases in Mindanao has increased. From a single HIV AIDS case reported in 2003, this has increased to 139. Although, the number of HIV-AIDS cases is not significant relative to the total population, it is worth noting that from 2008 to 2011 the annual average growth on HIV/AIDS cases was more than 100%.

Of the total 599 reported HIV-AIDS cases in Mindanao from 2003-2011, 62% of the patients belong to 21-25 years old, (31%) and 26-30 years old (31%). Almost all are males. In 2003, with the reported 1 person with HIV/AIDS, the patient was a girl. However, in 2004 to 2011, men with HIV/AIDS outstripped women in terms of number. From 2003 to 2011, the highest number of reported HIV/AIDS cases were coming from Region XI, particularly Davao Region. The major reported mode of HIV transmission in Davao is thru homosexual contact. Of the 189 cases in Davao City, 89% were transmitted by homosexual contact, 8% by heterosexual contact, 3% by bisexual contact and 1% by injecting drug use.
