Introduction
Official poverty statistics in the Philippines are generated by the
National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) with geographic
disaggregation from the national up to the provincial level. In addition
to the official statistics, there are several ongoing efforts to
generate other poverty indicators with disaggregation below the
provincial level. While several efforts have been exerted in the past to
produce poverty maps, sustainability and institutionalization have not
been achieved. In recognition of the need to regularly provide planners
and decision makers with useful tools for the formulation of poverty
reduction strategies, the NSCB has initiated efforts to produce poverty
maps for all the provinces of the country.
In the Davao Region, the poverty
mapping activity was piloted in the province of Compostela Valley in 2003. Since
the inital poverty mapping activity, the Davao Region had conducted
poverty mapping activities in Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte,
Compostela Valley, Davao del Sur, Digos City, Panabo City and Braulio
Dujali municipality.
It had also updated the poverty maps for the Province of Compostela
Valley, Davao Oriental and Panabo City and is currently conducting
poverty mapping activities to selected municipalities in Compostela
Valley.
Users forum, sponsored by the Local
Government Units (LGUs), were also conducted in the province of
Compostela Valley and cities of Panabo and Digos.
